Caterpillars

A few weeks ago, Rick caught a caterpillar outside on our patio.  We decided to put it in our butterfly habitat and within a day, it had turned into a chrysalis!  Owen was so excited!  Then, we found another caterpillar on our patio.  Once again, within a day it turned into a chrysalis! Now we had to play the waiting game.  We scoured the internet looking at pictures of caterpillars so we could guess what kind of butterfly it would turn into.  We also took this time to check out books at the library about all things caterpillars.  I think it's safe to say we are experts at this point.

As any true scientist would do, we documented our experience.  Here it is in pictures.

The wings were actually a really deep red and the tips were yellow, but this pictures was taken through the net so it's not the greatest.  When we were releasing one of the butterflies, it first crawled onto Owen's finger and then flew away.  As you can imagine, my little biologist was beside himself that he actually got to hold a REAL BUTTERFLY.  I got it on video and will try to add it in.

My Little Scientist

For Christmas, Owen received two science experiment kits and he was in heaven!  The day after we got home from our trip he was begging to do his "spearamints."

Rick and Owen building their volcano.  The wet gauze had to dry overnight before they could paint it.  Patience is not an attribute that comes easily to an eager 4 year old.

At last - the volcano erupting.  I told Owen to "act surprised."  I think it looks pretty authentic.

Paleontologist Owen with his goggles, mallet, pick, and brush for finding dinosaur fossils.

Eureka! He found a dino skeleton!  He was SUPER excited about this and
I had a great time being his assistant while Lexie napped.  Good job on the gifts this year, Santa!
